They Sold the Land and Kept Back Part of the Price

Everything else went, and it went properly, and he is not exaggerating about that.

Four things in eighteen months. Two of them were hard and one of them cost him a friendship, and he did not do any of it halfway. Anybody watching from the outside would say the man turned his life around, and they would be describing something real.

And there is one item he did not put on the table.

It is smaller than the four. That is what he tells himself, and it is even true. It is not the worst thing he was doing and it never was.

But he knows exactly where it is. He knows what it would cost to be rid of it. And the fact that he has a plan for how to keep it, and has had that plan the whole time, is the part that has started to sit badly.

Because a man who accidentally keeps something is one thing. A man who kept a key on purpose is a different thing, and he has known that for a while.

A couple sold land and held back part of it

There is a story early in Acts that people find harsh, and it becomes clearer when you notice what the issue actually was.

A husband and wife sell a piece of property and bring the money to the apostles.

And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet. (Acts 5:2, King James Version)

They brought a certain part. That is a real gift. Most of it went.

And Peter's response names the actual problem:

Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? (Acts 5:4)

Nobody required them to sell it. Nobody required them to give all of it.

The issue is not the percentage. It is that a private arrangement had been made and then presented as a whole one.

You are dealing with a God who is not counting the percentage. Acts 5 has Peter naming the arrangement rather than the amount, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an old story stop being about money and start being about a key.

A king kept the best animals and thought it would cover it

There is a scene where a king is given a clear instruction, carries out most of it, and keeps the good part.

When the prophet arrives, the king greets him cheerfully and says he has performed the commandment.

The prophet's answer is one of the most quoted lines in the Old Testament, and the setup is what gives it teeth.

And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. (1 Samuel 15:22)

Saul was not planning to keep the animals for himself. He says he kept them to sacrifice, and there is no strong reason to think he was lying about that.

He had a good use for the exception. That is the thing worth sitting with. The exception had a justification attached, and the justification was religious.

You are not being asked for the four and the good reason. 1 Samuel 15 has the good reason present and rejected in the same conversation, and it is His Spirit who makes an old confrontation land on somebody with a plan.

One thing, and Jesus said it as a number

The rich young man in Mark had a genuinely clean record and Jesus did not dispute any of it.

Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest. (Mark 10:21)

One thing.

Not many things. Not a general failure. He identifies a single item, and the single item is the one the man had already decided was not on the table.

And notice the order in that verse. Beholding him loved him, and then said. The love arrives first and it does not soften the sentence that follows it.

You are loved before the one thing gets named and not after. Mark 10 puts the looking and the loving ahead of the naming, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that order survivable rather than crushing.

A swept house with nothing put in it

There is an unsettling short parable Jesus tells about a room that gets cleaned and left.

Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. (Matthew 12:44)

Empty, swept, and garnished.

The cleaning was real. That is the whole strangeness of the picture. The place was genuinely tidied and looks better than it did.

But nothing moved in. And the story does not end well.

Which is a warning about a particular thing, and it is not about effort. Four items cleared and one key kept is not a failure of effort. It is a house that is very nearly finished.

You are not being told the four did not count. Matthew 12 has the sweeping described as real, and it is His Spirit who makes a warning arrive as an invitation rather than as a threat.

And the psalm asks for the search rather than reporting it

The way out of this in the Bible is not a man producing a full inventory himself.

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. (Psalm 139:23-24)

Search me. See if there be.

He does not present a list. He asks to be looked at, by somebody who can see the thing he has arranged not to look at directly.

That is a different move from confession, and it is the one available to a man who already knows what the item is and has been managing his own gaze around it for eighteen months.

You are able to ask for the search rather than run it yourself. Psalm 139 asks and does not report, and it is the Holy Spirit who is the one described as searching all things, even the deep things of God.
