He Cannot Tell the Difference Between What He Did and What He Is

There is a year of his life he can date to the month, and it has been fused to his name for a decade.

Not in a way anybody would see. He works. He is polite. He turns up to things and people like him. If you met him you would learn nothing.

But there is a sentence that runs underneath most days, and it is not really a sentence. It is more like a category. When something goes wrong, or a person is short with him, or a door does not open, the category is already there waiting with an explanation, and the explanation is always the same and it is always about that year.

He has apologized. He has made what could be made right. Two of the three people involved would say, out loud, that it is done.

That is what he cannot explain to anybody. It is settled on the outside and it did not come apart on the inside. What he did and what he is were welded together at some point without him agreeing to it, and he has never been able to find the seam.

Paul says where a man's life is kept

There is a short sentence in Colossians about location, and location is exactly what this is about.

For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. (Colossians 3:3, King James Version)

Hid with Christ in God.

Read that as an address. He is saying the actual life of the person is not stored where anybody assumes it is. Not in a record. Not in a year. Not in a reputation.

And hid is a passive word. Somebody did the hiding, and it was not the man himself, which matters because he has been trying to bury it for ten years and has never managed to.

You have a life stored somewhere nobody can reach into. Colossians 3 gives the address plainly, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a sentence about location do something a decade of trying could not.

Jesus separated the two out loud

There is a scene where a woman is dragged in front of a crowd with the facts of what she did, and the facts are not in dispute.

Everybody in that story has already collapsed the two things. What she did and what she is are the same to every person holding a stone.

After the crowd leaves, He says two sentences.

She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. (John 8:11)

Neither do I condemn thee. Then, go and sin no more.

He does not soften what happened. The second sentence is a straight instruction and He does not withdraw it.

But He puts the not-condemning first. He deals with what she is before He says anything at all about what she does.

You are addressed by somebody who takes those two apart in the right order. John 8 puts the neither do I condemn thee ahead of the instruction, and it is His Spirit who makes an order of sentences reach a man walking by a river.

The Bible names the voice and says what it does for a living

There is a line in Revelation that gives the accusing voice a job title.

for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. (Revelation 12:10)

Day and night. That is not an occasional thing. It is described as a continuous operation.

Which is worth knowing, because a man who has heard a category running underneath his days for ten years usually assumes the running is just how his own head works.

The Bible does not treat that as neutral weather. It names it, gives it a role, and then says the role has been ended.

You are not listening to your own conscience when the same category arrives on schedule. Revelation 12 names the accusing as a job and says it is cast down, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes the difference between conviction and accusation something a man can start to hear.

And Paul writes the verdict in one line

Romans 8 opens with a sentence that has no qualifier in it anywhere.

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus. (Romans 8:1)

Now. Not eventually.

No condemnation. Not less of it, not a reduced amount, not condemnation held in reserve for the bad weeks.

And read the next verse, because Paul immediately says who did it: the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free.

He does not say a man reasons his way out of it. He names a Person.

You are living under a verdict that was already handed down. Romans 8 says no condemnation with no qualifier attached, and it is the Spirit of life, named in the very next verse, who is credited with the freeing.

John writes to people whose own hearts say otherwise

There is a sentence in John's letter that seems to be written for exactly this situation.

For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. (1 John 3:20)

He does not say your heart is wrong to be uneasy. He does not tell anybody to talk themselves round.

He says God is greater than the heart, and He knows more than it does.

That is a ranking. When the inside verdict and God's verdict disagree, John says outright which one outranks the other, and he does not treat the inside one as the honest one.

You are ranked by somebody greater than the voice underneath your days. 1 John 3 puts God above the heart and says so in the sentence, and it is His Spirit who makes an old ranking hold when a category shows up on a bad afternoon.
