A Whole City Turned on the Say So of a Man Who Did Not Want to Be There

He is not stalling. He has an actual position and he can defend it.

The position is that a decision this size should not be made on a feeling. He has watched people make decisions on feelings and he has watched most of those decisions come apart inside a year, and he is not going to be one of them.

So he is waiting for something he cannot argue with. He is not asking for anything spectacular. He has said, out loud, that he does not need a burning bush. He would settle for something that is clearly not a coincidence.

He has been settling for that for about three years.

And here is the thing he does not look at directly. He has never defined what would count. There is no line written anywhere. Which means the standard can move quietly every time something nearly qualifies, and it has, and he knows roughly that it has.

A city turned on eight words from somebody who did not want to be there

There is a story in Jonah that people remember for the fish and forget for what happens after it.

He arrives at a huge city and delivers the shortest sermon in the Bible. In English it is eight words.

And he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. (Jonah 3:4, King James Version)

That is the whole message. No explanation, no invitation, no offer of terms.

And he did not want to be there. The whole book is about him not wanting to be there, and the last chapter has him angry about how it turned out.

So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. (Jonah 3:5)

No sign is recorded. No miracle in the city. A reluctant man says eight words and a whole population moves.

You are not waiting on the size of the delivery. Jonah 3 records the shortest message in the book producing the largest turning in it, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an old story about a bad preacher land on somebody with a standard he has never written down.

Jesus refused the request outright

There is an exchange where people ask Him for exactly what a man is waiting for, and He says no.

But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. (Matthew 12:39)

There shall no sign be given.

That is a refusal, and He gives it to people who were not being ridiculous. They were asking a teacher to demonstrate his authority, which is a reasonable thing to ask.

And the one sign He does name is a death and a coming back, which is to say the thing He was already going to do anyway.

He does not treat the request as neutral. He treats it as a substitute for something else.

You are not being denied something reasonable, you are being redirected. Matthew 12 has Him refusing and then naming the one thing He would do anyway, and it is His Spirit who makes a refusal read as an answer rather than a door closing.

The prophet got the whole display and it was not in it

There is a scene where a man in a cave is given the full show, and the passage is careful to say what was not in it.

And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. (1 Kings 19:11-12)

Wind, earthquake, fire. Three undeniable things.

And the text says three times, in a row, that He was not in them.

Then a still small voice, and the man covers his face.

Whoever wrote that was making a point about where God usually is, and the point costs the reader something, because the three impressive things are exactly what a man asks for.

You are listening for something that was never going to be in the wind. 1 Kings 19 rules out all three in sequence before it names the voice, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a quiet thing carry more than a loud one.

Paul says how faith arrives

There is a short sentence in Romans that says the mechanism.

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:17)

By hearing.

Not by seeing. Not by an event. Paul names the channel, and the channel is words rather than demonstrations.

Which reorganizes the waiting entirely. A man waiting for a sign is waiting on the wrong channel, and he can wait a long time on the wrong channel with nothing arriving and conclude that nothing is being sent.

You are supplied through a channel you have not been checking. Romans 10 names hearing rather than seeing, and it is His Spirit who takes words off a page and makes them land, which is the whole of how this works.

And Jesus said outright that a bigger sign would not do it

At the end of a story He tells about a rich man and a beggar, there is a line that settles this.

The rich man asks for somebody to be sent back from the dead to warn his brothers. And the answer is this:

And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead. (Luke 16:31)

Though one rose from the dead.

That is the largest sign anybody could name, and He says outright that it would not change the outcome for a person who was not moved by what was already available.

He is not being harsh. He is describing how it actually works, and He was in a position to know, because it happened, and it did not persuade everybody either.

You are not going to be moved by a bigger version of what has not moved you. Luke 16 names the biggest possible sign and rules it out, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an old parable land on a standard that keeps moving.
