The Voice Said It Before He Had Done One Thing

He worked it out on a drive home, which is where most people work things out.

He had just spent four hours doing something well, and had been checking a certain man's face for a reaction the entire time. Not consciously. He noticed it afterwards, the way you notice you have been clenching your jaw.

And then he did the arithmetic, and it went back further than he expected. School. Then a job. Then a different job. Then the way he tells stories at a table. Eleven years of auditioning, minimum, for a panel that has never once clapped for anybody.

That is what got him. Not that they withheld it from him. That they have never given it to anyone, and he has spent a decade assuming the problem was his performance.

He also does not know what he would do with a nod if he got one. He suspects it would last about four days.

The voice came before the work

There is a scene at the start of the Gospels that people race past to get to the miracles. Slow down at it, because the order of events is the whole point.

Jesus is about thirty. He has done nothing publicly. No teaching, no healing, no crowd.

And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. (Matthew 3:17, King James Version)

Read where that sits in the timeline. Before the ministry. Before one sermon. Before a single person was healed.

The affirmation is not a review. Nobody had anything to review.

You are looking at approval that arrived before the résumé did. Matthew 3 puts the voice before the work on purpose, and it is the Holy Spirit, who Matthew says descended in that same moment, who makes an order of events land as good news.

Read the order of the words

There are three things in that sentence and they are stacked in a specific way.

My Son. Beloved. Well pleased.

Relationship first. Then affection. Then approval last, and resting on the two before it.

That is the reverse of how a man is usually built. Most people are handed approval as the door you have to get through in order to earn the affection, and the relationship is what you get if you keep performing well enough for long enough.

God says it in the other direction, and He says it out loud in front of a crowd standing in a river.

You have been given the relationship first and the approval as the last thing on the list. Matthew 3 stacks the words in that order and never rearranges them, and it is His Spirit who makes a word order feel like something that changes a man's week.

He said it a second time, and added an instruction

It happens again later, on a mountain, in front of three of them.

This is my beloved Son: hear him. (Mark 9:7)

Same sentence, one addition.

And notice the situation. Peter has just said something clumsy about building three shelters. The passage says he did not know what to say, because he was afraid.

God does not correct Peter. He repeats the thing about His Son and tells them to listen.

Whatever else that scene is, it is not a scene where somebody has to get it right before the voice comes.

You are not being graded on whether you say the right thing in the room. Mark 9 records Peter's fumbling and then the voice anyway, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that sequence something a man can rest on rather than merely notice.

God had already described somebody He delights in

Long before the river, Isaiah wrote down what God says about the one He picks, and it has the same shape.

Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him. (Isaiah 42:1)

Mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth. Then the Spirit is put on him. The delight is not the reward for the work; it is what he is sent out under.

And a couple of verses on comes the line the whole chapter is famous for:

A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench. (Isaiah 42:3)

A bruised reed is a stalk that is already bent and no use to anybody. A smoking flax is a wick that has gone out and is still trailing smoke.

Both are things a working man would throw away. And the passage says He does neither.

You are the thing He specifically said He does not throw out. Isaiah 42 names both worn-out objects and rules out discarding either one, and it is His Spirit, put on the servant in that same verse, who makes that read like a description of somebody real.

And He is described as being unable to keep quiet about it

There is a line in Zephaniah that most people have never had read to them, and it is worth sitting with because of how physical it is.

The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. (Zephaniah 3:17)

Joy over thee with singing.

Not tolerate. Not accept. Not approve after review. The picture is somebody so pleased that words have run out and they have started making noise.

That is not a panel. A panel does not do that. A panel does not do that for anybody, which is exactly why eleven years of watching one has not produced anything.

You have somebody who is not withholding it and never was. Zephaniah 3 describes the singing rather than the assessment, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an old line about noise feel like it is aimed at one person.
