He Learned It From a Man Who Never Governed His Own

He said a sentence to his son about a bowl and heard it come out in somebody else's voice.

Not similar. The same. The same rhythm, the same three-word ending, the same slight rise at the front of it that he has not heard out loud since he was about fourteen and could reproduce from memory if anybody asked.

He stopped talking. The boy did not notice anything, because to the boy it was just his dad being short about a bowl on a Tuesday.

And he stood there and did the thing everybody does, which is to be shocked by it, and then, underneath the shock, something worse arrived, which was recognition. Not surprise. Recognition. He has been carrying that voice the whole time and it has been coming out for years and this is the first time he actually heard it.

He is not blaming the man. He wants that on the record, and it is genuinely true, and it is also not the point. The man had it and never governed it, and never once said anything about having it, and a boy in that house learned it the way you learn an accent.

Paul gives an instruction and attaches a reason

There is a short instruction in Colossians aimed at fathers, and the reason on the end of it is the useful half.

Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged. (Colossians 3:21, King James Version)

Lest they be discouraged.

He does not say lest they misbehave, and he does not say lest the house be unpleasant. He names an effect on the inside of a child.

Discouraged in that word means something like losing heart, having the wind taken out. It is a description of what happens underneath rather than of anything visible.

Which is the first thing anybody has ever said to him that names what actually happened in that house, and it was written to somebody else two thousand years ago.

You are described in a sentence somebody wrote about a real effect. Colossians 3 names the outcome rather than the behavior, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an old instruction reach a man who heard his father come out of his own mouth.

The verdict does not travel down

There was a saying going around in Ezekiel's time about exactly this, and God had the whole nation stop using it.

The saying was that the fathers eat sour grapes and the children's teeth are set on edge.

The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son. (Ezekiel 18:20)

The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father.

He is not saying damage does not travel, and anybody raised in it knows that it does. A voice travels. An accent travels.

He is saying a verdict does not. What came down is a weight and a habit, and it is not a sentence handed to a man by a court.

You are carrying a habit and not a sentence. Ezekiel 18 removes a proverb from a nation's mouth by name, and it is His Spirit who makes an old ruling land on a man standing in a kitchen.

Peter names what got paid for

There is a line in Peter that is unusually specific about which part was redeemed.

Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers. (1 Peter 1:18)

Received by tradition from your fathers.

He is not talking about sins somebody chose. He is naming the material that arrived without anybody choosing it, absorbed before there was a word for it, learned the way a boy learns an accent.

And he says that is the thing that was paid for.

Which means the inherited part is not the part with no answer to it. It is the part named on the invoice.

You were bought out of the part you never chose. 1 Peter 1 names the tradition from the fathers and says that is what the redeeming was of, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an old word like tradition reach a specific kitchen.

The word for the change is a renewing

There is an instruction in Romans about what actually changes a pattern, and the mechanism is named.

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind. (Romans 12:2)

Transformed by the renewing of your mind.

Conformed is a pressing word, the way a shape gets pressed into something from outside. That is a fair description of how a voice gets into a boy.

And the answer given is not resistance and it is not vigilance. It is a renewing, which is done to a mind rather than performed by one.

You are changed by a renewing rather than by watching yourself. Romans 12 names the mechanism and does not name willpower, and it is His Spirit who is described everywhere else as the one who renews.

And the passing on is described as ordinary

There is a passage about how the good version travels, and what is striking is how unremarkable it is.

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. (Deuteronomy 6:7)

Sitting. Walking. Lying down. Getting up.

That is not a program. It is the shape of an ordinary day, which is exactly how the other thing got in.

Which means the transmission runs on the same rails in both directions, and a man who learned a voice at a kitchen table is standing at one now.

You are standing on the same rails the other thing traveled on. Deuteronomy 6 names four ordinary moments rather than a method, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that symmetry usable rather than frightening.
